Rethinking Dionysus and Apollo: Redrawing Today’s Philosophical Chessboard

چکیده
Abstract This essay pursues Gilbert Durand’s plea for a new anthropological spirit that would overcome the bureaucracy-or-madness dichotomy which has since Nietzsche left its imprint upon contemporary thought, forcing it to choose between an “Apollonian” ontology established some kind of first principle and “Dionysian” consisting in erasure any founding norm. It does so by reclaiming Dionysus Apollo’s original twin-ness dual affirmation dialogue with theory, especially Roy Wagner’s thesis on interplay “elicitation” “containment” sociocultural life. What happen then, I ask, if we were reimagine today’s philosophical game – after Heidegger Deleuze, Derrida turns variously increasingly around subtraction otherwise: as chiastic board Apollo cut Dionysus’s continuum, turn restore despite cuts, obliteration two gods entail inevitable dismemberment other? Accordingly, offer full reassessment complementary roles ancient-Greek culture discussion not only Nietzsche’s Dionysian philosophy but also Ihab Hassan’s postmodern critique Orpheus. All less purpose putting forward metaphysics than intent restating translucent-ness keeps together reality thought against claim they are either transparent or opaque one another.

Redrawing Foucault’s Social Ontology*
I propose that Foucault‟s works, since he wrote Discipline and Punish, rely on an implicit meta-theory that is compatible with the fundamentals of Critical Realism. To this end I examine the status of truth, methodology and social ontology used by Foucault. If this thesis is correct, then a critical realist reading of Michel Foucault would avoid some of the pitfalls that have been attributed to...
متن کاملGeometrical optics and chessboard pebbling
Recently Chung. Graham, Morrison and Odlyzko [l] studied some combinatorial and asymptotic enumeration aspects of chessboard pebbling. In this problem, we start with a single pebble, placed at the origin (0,O) of an infinite chessboard. At each step we remove a pebble from (i,j) and repIace it with two pebbles at positions (a + 1,j) and (i.j + I). provided the latter are unoccupied. After m ste...
متن کاملRedrawing the Boundary between Organism and Environment
In this position paper, I argue that a fruitful, and as yet largely unexplored, avenue for artificial life research lies in modelling organisms (specifically, phenotypes) and environment as a single dynamical system. From this perspective, the origin and evolution of life is the progressive control of the dynamical system at a local level by constraints which are represented on an organism’s ge...
